A financial planner actively looks for ways to help people. He/she understands the client's requirements by asking appropriate questions. He/she uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

He/she must be skilled at using Mathematics to solve problems and compiles data for financial reports and must be skilled in explaining financial concepts effectively.


A financial planner analyzes and examines social and economic data of clients. He/she would have to contact clients periodically to determine if there have been changes in their financial status, devises debt liquidation plans that include payoff priorities and timelines.

He/she also guides clients in the gathering of information such as bank account records, income tax returns, life and disability insurance records, pension plan information and wills interviews clients to determine their current income, expenses, insurance coverage, tax status, financial objectives, risk tolerance, and other information needed to develop a financial plan. May conduct seminars and workshops on financial planning topics such as retirement planning, tax planning.

To be good at his/her job he/she must research and investigate available investment opportunities to determine whether the clients fit into financial plans.

Educational Qualifications

A finance post graduate degree like MBA or CA, CFA is required for most jobs as a financial planner.
